Sudbury police responded to a home on Lorne Street just after 12:35 a.m. on July 2, following reports of a serious altercation involving intimate partner violence.
According to police, a woman and her family member were attacked during a confrontation with the woman’s partner. When officers arrived, they found a 32-year-old woman outside the residence suffering from serious but non-life-threatening injuries. She was treated on scene and transported to hospital by Greater Sudbury Paramedics.
Inside the home, police discovered a 63-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds. Despite efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Two young children were also found in the residence but were unharmed.
A gofundme campaign has been created by the daughter to send her Mother (Esther Umoru) remains home.
At approximately 11:30 a.m., officers located the 36-year-old suspect in a wooded area near Alder Street. Police say the man appeared to have self-inflicted injuries. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to hospital for medical treatment. Despite being hospitalized, he remains under police custody.
The man now faces several serious charges under the Criminal Code of Canada, including:
- First-degree murder
- Attempted murder
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
- Forcible confinement
- Choking
Due to his need for medical care, it’s not yet known when he will appear in Bail Court to face these charges.
