Steven Squires charged with first-degree murder as well as failing to stop at the scene of an accident after striking and killing cyclist Rod Kelly in Courtenay

On February 8, 2024 at 10:56 p.m. Comox Valley RCMP responded to a report of an injured cyclist on the Comox Valley Parkway near Minto Road in Courtenay.

Emergency Health Services paramedics and Cumberland Fire Department firefighters attended and provided emergency first aid to the victim; however, Rod Kelly, 54, died of his injuries.

Investigators are working to identify the exact time this occurred. The victim was riding a red and white Specialized bicycle along the parkway at the time of the collision. Anyone traveling in the area as early as 9:00 p.m., and along the parkway during this time that may have seen the victim or has dashcam video could assist the investigation.

RCMP announced on February 28th that they have arrested the driver on Saturday, February 10, 2024 in the Comox Valley. 45-year-old Steven Squires of Cumberland has been charged with:

  • First Degree Murder;
  • Fail to Stop after accident causing death.

He remains in custody.

As this matter is now before the courts, no further details will be provided.
