Two people have been charged in connection with the death of a 17-year-old girl in M’Chigeeng First Nation.
Police were called to a residence on Lakeshore Drive on August 17 after receiving a request from Emergency Medical Services for assistance with a seriously injured person. When officers arrived, they found the teenager deceased.
Following an investigation, police arrested and charged two individuals with second-degree murder.
Davin Wassegijig, 19, is facing one count of second-degree murder, along with two counts of failing to comply with a release order.
A second accused, a 17-year-old female, has also been charged with second-degree murder. Her identity cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Both accused remain in custody pending court proceedings.
The investigation is continuing with members of the UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service Crime Unit and Uniform Officers, assisted by the Ontario Provincial Police Crime Unit and Forensic Identification Services.
Police say the incident appears to be isolated and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Investigators have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death while the investigation continues. Police are also asking the public to respect the privacy of the victim’s family during this difficult time.
