Montreal, Quebec 2026 Homicide Victim List
Montreal police are investigating a suspected homicide after 41-year-old Kerline Jean, was found dead and a man was seriously injured inside an apartment on August 17th, the 16th homicide reported on the Island of Montreal this year, according to police.
The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) said officers were called around 2:25 p.m. after receiving a 911 report about a potentially injured person inside an apartment on 39th Street, near Paul-Corbeil Street, in the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough.
When officers arrived, they found two people suffering from serious injuries. Kerline Jean was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 35-year-old man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police said he remains in critical condition.
Investigators found signs of violence to the upper bodies of both individuals. The injuries may have been caused by a sharp object, police said.
The injured man is being treated as a suspect in the investigation. Police have not yet confirmed the nature of the relationship between the two individuals.
Update August 22nd 2026: Betoven Étienne, 35, has been charged with first-degree murder. According to CBC, His lawyer stated that he pleaded not guilty before the judge and intends to contest the charges in the near future.
