- Second Degree Murder
Update: According to the Toronto Star, the Crown has withdrawn the murder case against Abdul Yeberebaba in the death of 15-year-old Jack, saying there is no longer a reasonable prospect of conviction.
Yeberebaba, who was arrested in Calgary earlier this year after a Canada-wide search, had been charged with second-degree murder and remained in custody.
On August 12th 2016, Crown attorney David Newton said Toronto police conducted a thorough investigation, including reviewing a significant amount of surveillance footage. However, after reviewing all available evidence and considering what additional evidence might emerge, the Crown determined it could not reasonably secure a conviction.
The accessory-after-the-fact murder charge against 19-year-old Jayden Samuel-James was also withdrawn for similar reasons. A similar charge against 21-year-old Rajveer Gill is also expected to be withdrawn.
