Three OPP officers charged with manslaughter and criminal negligence causing death in relation to the shooting death of 18-month-old Jameson Shapiro in November 2020.

According to reports Jameson Shaprio, 18-months-old, was abducted by his father from a home in Trent Lakes. Ontario Provincial Police attempted to stop a truck driven by the boy’s father in the City of Kawartha Lakes, on November 26th 2020.

The toddler’s 33-year-old father crashed the truck into a police cruiser, injuring an officer. There was an interaction between police and the father, and three OPP officers shot the vehicle multiple times. A handgun was found inside the pickup truck after the shooting.

Both Jameson and his 33-year-old dad were killed in the shooting. A gofundme campaign has been created to aid his mother Tara Shapiro.

On August 31st Joseph Martino, director of the Special Investigations Unit, announced “there is reasonable grounds to believe that three Ontario provincial police officers have committed criminal offenses.”

OPP officers Nathan Vanderheyden, Kenneth Pengelly and Grason Cappus were each charged with manslaughter and criminal negligence resulting in death. They are scheduled to appear in court in Lindsay on October 6.
