South Indian Lake RCMP responded to a report of a deceased male located in a wooded area outside the community of O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation on May 4, 2024, at 7:50 pm.
Officers attended and located a 61-year-old male with obvious injuries. Police said the death is being treated as a homicide.
South Indian Lake RCMP, along with RCMP Major Crimes Services and Forensic Identification Services, continue to investigate
On May 7, 2024, RCMP arrested Joanne Elizabeth Baker-Spence, 28, who was charged with Manslaughter and remanded into custody.
Update: As the investigation progressed, on July 9, 2025, RCMP Major Crime Services arrested and charged Jesse Baker, 25, also from O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation, with Manslaughter in relation to the same incident. He was remanded into custody.
