Edmonton police responded to the area of 109 Avenue and 96 Street on the report of gunshots on June 10, 2024, at approximately 5:13 a.m.

On arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from serious, life-threatening injuries. He was declared deceased at the scene.

An autopsy was performed and determined that the victim, Habib Abukar, 36, died of gunshot wounds. The manner of death is homicide.

Homicide Section detectives have since arrested Mahad Ismael Elmi, 46, and charged him with second-degree murder. Investigators believe that they were known to each other.
