Ladysmith RCMP announced on January 7th 2025, an unresponsive baby was delivered at a private residence in Ladysmith on December 27, 2023. Despite life-saving efforts from BC Emergency Health Services (BC EHS) and subsequent palliative care, the infant died on January 6, 2024.
The Vancouver Island District General Investigation Section assisted and took over a complex investigation that involved the Ministry of Children and Family Development and the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) and the BC Coroners Service.
After a detailed investigation, it was determined that Gloria Lemay, a 77-year-old woman, was involved in the birth process. Investigators believe her actions contributed to the infant’s injuries, which ultimately led to the baby’s death. A warrant for her arrest was issued on January 7, 2025, and she was taken into custody later that day.
Ms. Lemay is now facing manslaughter charges. As the case is currently before the courts, further details cannot be disclosed at this time.
According to reports Gloria Lemay “Birth Attendant” was banned from practicing midwifery more than two decades ago. Her website was still active as of January 9th.
Quoted from her website “On January 1, l998 British Columbia regulated the profession of midwifery and I declined to join the College of Midwives.
I do not agree with the policies of the College of Midwives, which include inducing healthy women after a certain length of pregnancy, administering unnecessary medications to healthy babies, and recommending that women who had a history of cesarean birth give birth in hospital.
I was fearful that regulation would change the public service and alternative nature of true midwifery and make it more like the allopathic model.”
