According to Cold Lake RCMP, family member took 16 month old Veronica Poitras to the Cold Lake Hospital in the evening of August 26th.
Police were notified at approximately 7:00pm of the situation. Veronica was transferred to an Edmonton Hospital that same night.
Veronica Poitras was taken off of life support on August 29th. An autopsy conducted on August 30th revealed the manner of death to be a homicide. Police said the child suffered head and neck injuries.
Update October 24th
On Monday, October 23rd Mounties charged Sherman Robert Whitford, 35, with second degree murder in relation to the death of Veronica Poitras. Sherman Whitford was the boyfriend of the infant’s mother.
Update December 4th 2020
Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Stephen Hillier sentenced Sherman Whitford, 38, to eight years in prison for the manslaughter death of Veronica Poitras, his girlfriend’s baby daughter. The crown and defence agreed to give Whitford credit for four-and-a-half years, including enhanced credit for time in solitary confinement.
