Ottawa Police Service received two 911 calls from the Berrigan Dr. area reporting a suspicious incident where a man was yelling for help asking people to call 911 on March 6th at approximately 10:52 p.m.
On arrival to 324 Berrigan Dr, officers identified a suspect who was quickly arrested without incident.
Police gained entry to the home where they located six victims. The victims are two-and-a-half-month-old Kelly Wickramasinghe, two-year-old Rinyana Wickramasinghe, four-year-old Ashwini Wickramasinghe, seven-year-old Inuka Wickramasinghe, 35-year-old Darshani Banbaranayake Gama Walwwe Darshani Dilanthika Ekanyake who was the mother of the children, and 40-year-old Ge Gamini Amarakoon who is an acquaintance of the family who has been living at the home. He recently arrived in Canada. The father of the children and husband of the victim Dhanushka Wickramasinghe, 34, suffered a slash to his eye and one of his hands and was able to subdue the suspect. He was taken to hospital where he remains in serious but stable condition.
The investigation has found that an edged weapon was used to cause the deaths and injuries.
Police arrested and charged 19-year-old Febrio De-Zoysa with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. The accused is a Sri Lankan national who is believed to have been in Canada as a student.
Chief Eric Stubbs said “Our investigators and Forensic teams are working very hard to determine all of the facts and ensure justice is done. But that also means we must maintain the integrity of the investigation for court. I want to emphasize that this was a senseless act of violence perpetrated on purely innocent people.”
A gofundme campaign had been created by Buddhist Congress of Canada to support the two families.
*Who is Febrio De-Zoysa
- De-Zoysa had been a student at Algonquin College, but had not attended since the winter 2023 semester, a spokesperson for Algonquin College confirmed.
- De-Zoysa arrived in Canada two years ago, according to his aunt, source: Global News
- He lived with his aunt during his first month in the country, then later met Wickramasinghe at Algonquin College, as reported by Global News.
- He had been living with the victims on Berrigan Drive in Barrhaven rent-free, according to Bhanthe Sumanarathana, the resident monk at the Hilda Jayewardenaramaya Buddhist Monastery.
- The family had recently celebrated De-Zoya’s his 19th birthday, Sumanarathana said.
- His aunt told Global News that his demeanour had suddenly changed recently and he stopped contact with family members, blocking their phone numbers and social media accounts
- He was known for posting videos of the video game Minecraft on YouTube. His YouTube account has now been taken down.
