Vancouver Homicide Victim List
More than nine months after a fatal stabbing in East Vancouver, a suspect has been charged in connection with the death of 54-year-old Michael Smadu.
Vancouver police were called to a residence near East 6th Avenue and Fraser Street shortly before 1 a.m. on September 3, 2025, following reports of a man suffering from stab wounds.
Emergency crews attempted lifesaving measures at the scene, but Smadu died before he could be transported to hospital.
At the time, investigators had not made any arrests and said it was unclear whether the victim and the suspect were known to one another. The investigation remained active as detectives worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the homicide.
Police have now announced that 32-year-old David Richard Morin has been charged with manslaughter in relation to Smadu’s death.
Morin remains in custody and made his first court appearance on the charge on June 12, 2026. He is scheduled to return to court on July 3, 2026, as the case proceeds through the justice system.
The investigation remains ongoing.
