Cassie Acorn has pleaded guilty to infanticide of her 3-month-old daughter in Charlottetown PEI

The Charlottetown Police Major Crime Unit has charged 39-year-old Cassie Acorn, a resident of Charlottetown, with murder under sections 229(a)(ii) and 235(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada. The charge follows an investigation into the death of her 3-month-old daughter.

Charlottetown Police said the infant identified in an obituary as Winter Elizabeth Rose Acorn, passed away on March 20, 2025, at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, where she was receiving treatment for a fractured skull that was reportedly sustained during an incident in Charlottetown on March 16, 2025.

Det.-Sgt. Darren MacDougall told CBC News “swelling and bleeding in the child’s brain and ultimately her death.”

Acorn made her first appearance in P.E.I. Supreme Court on April 10, and has now been released with conditions on her activities in place.

Update: Cassie Acorn has pleaded guilty to infanticide due to on November 24th. The maximum sentence for infanticide is five years in custody. The Crown’s office told CBC that Acorn had the capacity to be held responsible, but was suffering from depression and postpartum depression at the time, allowing her to plead guilty to the lesser charge of infanticide.
