RCMP said Cst. Yang, 31, partnered with a City of Burnaby employee, and was engaged in her duties at a homeless camp on Gilmore Way on October 18th at approximately 11:05am. According to reports Yang was helping a city employee check on a man living in a tent.

Investigators said there was an altercation and Yang was stabbed. Yang was rushed to taken to Vancouver General Hospital where she was pronounced deceased. The suspect was also shot and injured and remains in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Cst. Yang worked with Burnaby RCMP’s Police Mental Health and Homeless Outreach Team.

An investigation into the murder of Cst. Yang is also underway and will be conducted by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).

Update October 26th
On October 19, 2022, 37-year-old Jongwon Ham, of Burnaby, was charged with first-degree murder. He remained in custody following his arrest on October 18.

Update April 20th, 2026
According to CBC, Jongwon Ham, who is accused of killing Shaelyn Yang in 2022, has been ruled unfit to stand trial by the B.C. Supreme Court.

A judge determined that Ham’s mental condition, specifically worsening psychosis and delusions, prevents him from understanding the legal process or participating in his own defense. Two psychiatrists agreed he has a psychotic disorder and is not mentally capable of standing trial at this time.
