Toronto police responded to a call for a Shooting in the Jane Street and Flastaff Avenue area on Monday, June 24, 2024, at approximately 11:58 p.m.
It was reported that four suspects exited a light coloured SUV with firearms and several shots were fired. The suspects got back into the vehicle and fled the scene.
On arrival police located Ajay Simpson, 20, of Toronto suffering from Gunshot injuries. He was rushed to hospital where he died of his injuries.
Investigators are asking witnesses, or anyone who was in the area at the time that may have information to contact police.
Update: On Thursday, July 4, 2024, a 14-year-old male*, was arrested and charged with:
- First Degree Murder
He is scheduled to appear virtually at the Ontario Court of Justice, 10 Armoury Street, on Friday, July 5, 2024, at 10 a.m., in room 606.
Update June 19th 2026: A Toronto judge has convicted a teenager of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Ajay Simpson, rejecting the Crown’s argument that the killing was planned and deliberate enough to warrant a first-degree murder conviction.
According to reports, Superior Court Justice Peter Bawden concluded that while the teen intended to kill Simpson, the evidence did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the murder was planned and deliberate. The judge cited the random nature of the attack, as well as the accused’s age and apparent impulsive behaviour during the shooting.
Prosecutors have indicated they will seek an adult sentence. Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, a youth convicted of second-degree murder faces a maximum sentence of seven years. However, if sentenced as an adult, the teen would face a mandatory life sentence.
