Igloolik RCMP received a report that a man had been brought to the local health centre already deceased on April 23, 2026, around 5:00 a.m.

Officers attended the health centre and, after an initial assessment, determined the death appeared to be suspicious and potentially criminal in nature. Investigators quickly identified a suspect and made an arrest.

The Nunavut RCMP Major Crime Unit subsequently took over the investigation. Later that same day, 39-year-old Leonard Qamaniq was formally charged with second-degree murder under Section 235(1) of the Criminal Code.

Qamaniq was brought before a Justice of the Peace and was remanded into custody. He is scheduled to appear in court again on June 9, 2026, in Iqaluit, Nunavut.
