He appeared in court at Toronto Regional Bail Centre, to face that charge on Friday, June 30, 2023.

Tran was rearrested on Friday, November 3, 2023, and charged with:

  1. Second-degree Murder

Update June 4th 2026: A Toronto jury has found Khoa Tran guilty of second-degree murder in the 2023 death of his neighbour, Reeyaz Habib, whose body was discovered in a garbage compactor at a Liberty Village condominium building. Tran’s wife, Isabelle Nguyen, was also convicted of being an accessory after the fact and committing an indignity to a dead body.

According to Global News, during the trial, Tran testified that he and Habib had ongoing disputes, including disagreements over barbecue smoke and a confrontation that occurred shortly before Habib’s disappearance. However, Tran denied responsibility for his neighbour’s death.

Under Canadian law, a second-degree murder conviction carries an automatic life sentence. A judge will determine Tran’s parole eligibility at a later date, with jurors offering a range of recommendations from 10 to 25 years.

A sentencing hearing for both Tran and Nguyen has been scheduled for Sept. 9. Following the verdicts, the court revoked their bail and ordered both into custody pending sentencing.
