The infant, who was less than one year old, was found unresponsive and rushed to the hospital. Police said the child died from their injuries on December 28th.

Investigators later determined the injuries were suspicious. On January 3rd 2026, a 37-year-old man was arrested in Melfort and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the infant’s death.

RCMP stated they are not releasing the names of either the child or the accused, citing the possibility of a publication ban. Police also confirmed that the accused and the infant were known to one another.
