Man Charged With First-Degree Murder in 2024 Killing of Dwight Bennett

On June 20, 2024, a 39-year-old man suffered a medical emergency at the Blue Quill Garden Apartments in Edmonton and was taken to hospital, where he later died. Because the incident initially appeared to be a medical emergency, police were not involved.

However, after investigators received new information in May 2025, the case was reopened. Homicide detectives worked with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and the death was subsequently determined to be a criminal homicide.

A 40-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the June 2024 death of 39-year-old Dwight Bennett.

Police arrested Zachary Jerome-Legault on July 31, 2026, after the case was reclassified as a homicide following new information received in May 2025.

Investigators have now confirmed that Bennett died from a gunshot wound, a detail that was previously withheld to protect the investigation. Police continue to ask anyone with information about the case to come forward.
