Calgary Police responded to reports of a disturbance in the 1400 block of 38 Street S.W. at approximately 10:50 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.
On arrival, police located a man suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was taken to hospital, where he later died.
Following an autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the victim was identified as Jaden River Big Sorrel Horse, 23. Investigators have ruled his death a homicide.
Two people have now been charged in connection with the case. Annata’Ksisstsi’Kommaokii De’Channa Hope Smith, also known as Dechanna Wells, 22, is charged with manslaughter. Naatoyikakatosina TaCheáh Heaven Wells, also known as Techeah Wells, 23, is also facing a charge of manslaughter.
Both accused are scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2026.
