Wainwright RCMP responded to a break and enter in progress at a home near the Wainwright Hospital on February 22nd at approximately 4:00pm.

Police arrived to find a man assaulting a woman with a weapon. Police arrested  Joseph Fabian Dube, 54, and began life saving efforts on the victim, Nicole Amundson, 50. Amundson was rushed to hospital where she died of her injuries. Police have not released the cause of death at this time.

Joseph Fabian Dube has been charged with First-Degree murder. Police said Dube and Amundson were known to each other, however, were estranged. No further details can be released, as this matter is before the courts.

Update: According to the RCMP, On Dec. 4, 2023, a 54-year-old individual entered a second-degree murder guilty plea and was sentenced on May 23, 2025, to life imprisonment. He has been in custody since February 2022 and is eligible to request parole in 11 years.
