Saguenay firefighters and local police were called to an explosion at a home on Dubose St, in Saguenay’s Arvida district on January 10 at approximately 10:00am.
On arrival police located a deceased 39-year-old Dérick Lalancette and his son who was 2-years old. His second child, who was under a year old was located deceased later that afternoon. According to journaldequebec.com the children have been identified and Félix, 2, and Édouard 6-months. According to reports their mother had left the children with their father a few hours before the explosion so that he could spend time with them.
Police said the explosion happened in the basement apartment of the home. Hugues Beaulieu, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec said they have ruled out breakage of a domestic appliance due to the magnitude of the blast. He said Lalancette who worked at Niobec mine in Saint-Honoré, had “knowledge of explosives”.
