UPDATE: Cynthia Hamelin charged with first-degree murder in relation to the 2019 death of 83-year-old Guiseppina Micieli

On July 20th 2019, Edmonton police were called to a senior’s housing facility in the area of 95 Street and 108A Avenue on report of a break-and-enter.

Police and paramedics arrived to find 83-year-old  Guiseppina Micieli suffering from serious injuries sustained from the assault. It is alleged that Cynthia Hamelin, 49, broke into Micieli’s suite and assaulted her. The victim and accused were not known to each other.

Hamelin was initially charged with Break and Enter, Aggravated Assault and Forcible Confinement.

Guiseppina Micieli died in hospital of her injuries on August 26th. An autopsy revealed the cause of death to be pneumonia caused by blunt force injuries sustained during the assault in July, and the manner of death to be a homicide.

On November 7th, 2019 EPS released that they have charged Cynthia Hamelin, with the first-degree murder of Guiseppina Micieli.

Update May 25th 2022
Cynthia Hamelin was sentenced on Wednesday may 25th to 10 years in prison for the death of 83-year-old Giuseppina Micieli. Earlier in 2022, Cynthia Hamelin pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the 2019 death of Giuseppina Micieli. She had originally been charged with first-degree murder.
