Banff police responded to the report of an altercation at a local drinking establishment on Banff Avenue at approximately 12:09 a.m on September 3rd.
Police arrived to find a 27-year-old man from Foothills County suffering from stabbing injuries. He was taken to hospital where he died of his injuries.
Police have confirmed the victim as 27-year-old Ryden Brogden.
Police said two males were taken into custody at a nearby location, and assured the public that this incident is not related to a similar one that occurred last month in Banff.
Update September 4th
John Sproule, 20, from Lake Country, B.C has been charged with second degree murder.
Update March 5th, 2025: John Sproule, 23, who was originally charged with second-degree, was found guilty of the lesser offence of manslaughter.
According to CBC “Sproule, Brogden told him to “f–k off” and then pushed and suckerpunched him. Sproule testified that Brogden “ragdolled” him down the street, throwing punches and pulling his shirt over his face. When he was pinned up against a picnic table, Sproule says he pulled out his work knife and began swinging and stabbing at Brogden. The defence filed photos showing a number of injuries to Sproule’s face. “
