The RNC responded to a call for assistance by paramedics at a home in the Mitchell Court area of St John’s on March 16th at approximately 10:53 pm where an 82-year-old woman was located unconscious.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Police were initially investigating the death as suspicious, however, they announced on March 25, that The RNC Criminal Investigation Division are investigating the death as a homicide. The victim has been identified as Mildred (Millie) Brake.

Update on June 22, 2023, as a result of the investigation, 27-year-old Brandon TOBIN from St. John’s stands charged with manslaughter and failure to comply with a court order.

According to CBC, Brandon Tobin, has been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter by criminal negligence in the 2022 death of his grandmother, Mildred “Millie” Brake. The court heard Tobin knowingly used cocaine despite understanding it could trigger seizures that made him violent, ultimately leading to the fatal attack during a confused state.

The judge called the case a “profound tragedy,” noting Tobin was held responsible for his reckless drug use rather than the act itself. The sentence reflects both mitigating factors, like his remorse and guilty plea, and aggravating ones, including his violent history and the vulnerability of the victim.
