Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews were already at the scene fighting the blaze when police arrived. Several residents were safely evacuated from the building. Five individuals were taken to hospital, three in critical condition and two in stable condition. One of those initially listed as critical was later upgraded to stable. Sadly, the other two—an 18-year-old woman and a 48-year-old woman—died from their injuries.
The Winnipeg Police Service Homicide Unit continued its investigation into the fatal fire that occurred on February 7, 2026, in the 300 block of Agnes Street. The incident claimed the lives of two women.
The deceased have been identified as 18-year-old Tyanaa Nattaway and 48-year-old Crystal Mary Ellen Beardy. Both were members of Garden Hill First Nation and had been living in Winnipeg.
Investigators determined that the fire was intentionally set following a dispute among family members.
On February 10, 2026, police arrested 30-year-old Douglas Wayne Jr. Nattaway in connection with the incident. He has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of arson with disregard for human life. Police confirmed that Nattaway was previously known to both victims.
