Toronto police responded to a call for a shooting in the Warden Avenue and Ellesmere Road area July 6, 2024, at approximately 10:18 p.m.
On arrival police located Sulakshan Selvasingam, 28, of Pickering, suffering from gunshot wounds. Life-saving measures were performed and Selvasingam was transported to the hospital by paramedics where he was pronounced deceased.
Investigators said it is reported that the suspect(s) and the victim were in the area when the suspect(s) fired several shots into the victim’s car. The suspect(s) then fled the scene before the police arrival.
Update: On Monday, July 15, 2024, with the assistance of the OPP, police arrested two youths, aged 15 and 16, and they were charged with First Degree Murder. It is alleged that during the arrest they were found to be in possession of a Glock handgun.
Police said these two youths were responsible for 11 additional shooting incidents that occurred between June 29 and July 14, 2024, with eight of these shootings taking place over the Canada Day long weekend. Three different stolen vehicles were used by the youths during this period.
As a result, they are facing an additional 154 charges in relation to these 11 shooting incidents. A male youth*, 15, of Oshawa, is charged with: 1. First Degree Murder 2. eleven counts of Conspiracy to Commit an Indictable Offence 3. twelve counts of Possess Firearm Without Holding a Licence 4. twelve counts of Occupy Motor Vehicle With Firearm 5. twelve counts of Possess Loaded Regulated Firearm 6. ten counts of Discharge Firearm into a Place/Reckless to Others 7. Discharge Firearm Reckless as to the Life or Safety of Another Person 8. twelve counts of Possess Property or Thing Obtained by Crime/Exceeding $5000 9. twelve counts of Possess Firearm, etc. While Prohibited 10. Possession of Prohibited Device Knowing No Authority
A male youth*, 16, of Stouffville, is charged with: 1. First Degree Murder 2. eleven counts of Conspiracy to Commit an Indictable Offence 3. twelve counts of Possess Firearm Without Holding a Licence 4. twelve counts of Occupy Motor Vehicle With Firearm 5. twelve counts of Possess Loaded Regulated Firearm 6. ten counts of Discharge Firearm into a Place/Reckless to Others 7. Discharge Firearm Reckless as to the Life or Safety of Another Person 8. twelve counts of Possess Property or Thing Obtained by Crime/Exceeding $5000 9. Fail to Stop for Police/Pursuit 10. twelve counts of Possess Firearm, etc. While Prohibited 11. Dangerous Operation 12. Possession of Prohibited Device Knowing No Authority.
In late June, the Service announced the creation of Project Beacon, which involved specialty squads, divisional uniform members and strategically deployed resources to address tow truck related crimes.
On Wednesday, May 15, 2024, two tow trucks were parked in the Markham Road and Steeles Avenue East area. It is alleged that: • one suspect opened fire on the two parked tow trucks • the suspect responsible was being paid to commit the shooting by a second person No one was in the tow trucks at the time of the shooting, and one of the trucks sustained damage. A 17-year-old youth was arrested and is charged with six offences. A male youth*, 17, of Toronto, is charged with: 1. Discharge Firearm with Intent to Wound, Endanger Life or Prevent Arrest 2. Possess Loaded Regulated Firearm 3. Occupy Motor Vehicle With Firearm 4. Possess Firearm Without Holding a Licence 5. Possess Property or Thing Obtained by Crime/Exceeding $5000 6. Possess Property or Thing Obtained by Crime/Not Exceeding $5000 Jamal Sayed Waizi, 33, of Oshawa, was also charged in connection to this incident with: 1. Conspiracy to Commit an Indictable Offence

On Thursday, November 14, 2024, a male youth*, 15, of Toronto, was charged with:
First Degree Murder.
