Saskatchewan RCMP announce a charge in the 2021 death of inmate at the Regina Correctional Centre

Police said a 38-year-old male inmate was found in medical distress in a holding cell in the admissions area on February 8th, 2021.  Corrections staff alerted EMS and initiated life-saving measures.

EMS continued life-saving measures until declaring the inmate deceased at approximately 3:40 pm.

The Saskatchewan RCMP’s General Investigation Section, working alongside the Saskatchewan Coroners Service, conducted a thorough investigation into the inmate’s death. It was discovered that an adult male had supplied the deceased with cocaine shortly before he fell into medical distress.

As the investigation progressed and following consultation with Crown prosecutors, charges were filed against 42-year-old Mitch Schoffer of Moose Jaw. On January 6, 2025, Schoffer was formally charged with manslaughter under Section 236(b) of the Criminal Code, as well as trafficking cocaine under Section 5(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
