Langley RCMP responded to shots fired in the area of 196 Street and 84 Avenue, Langley on September 21, 2024, at approximately 6:00 p.m.
On arrival, first responders located two men suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the victims succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The other victim, located at 208 Street and 78 Avenue, was taken to hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said preliminary indications are that this shooting is linked to the ongoing BC gang conflict. Although no suspects have yet been identified, this is believed to be a targeted-shooting and an isolated event.
IHIT has identified the deceased victim as 38-year-old Johnathan Hebrada-Walters, from Edmonton, Alberta.
Hebrada-Walters was known to police and initial information indicates that this shooting was a targeted event, linked to the ongoing BC gang conflict. The surviving victim, whose name is not being released, was also known to police.
This investigation continues to unfold,
says Staff Sergeant David Lee of IHIT, We are in contact with the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of BC (CFSEU-BC) as well as policing partners in Alberta to determine how these victims are linked to one another.
Homicide investigators are in the area canvassing for CCTV, dashcam, and witnesses. If anyone has CCTV or dashcam in the area of 196 Street and 84 Avenue between 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on September 21, they are being asked to contact IHIT at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
On September 8, two young adults were seriously injured during an alleged assault that occurred during a road rage incident in Mission. Investigators confirmed that the male suspect was Johnathan Hebrada-Walters. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has said that they believe the homicide was related to the BC Gang Conflict. There is not believed to be any connection between the road rage incident and the homicide of Hebrada-Walters.
Charges have now been approved against the female involved in the road rage incident. Amber Jenelle Toews, 35, also from Edmonton, has been charged with assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, and mischief under $5,000. A Canada-wide arrest warrant has been issued for her, and Mission RCMP are working with our law enforcement partners in Alberta to try to locate and arrest Amber. Mission RCMP notes that Amber has been known to travel around BC and other western provinces as well, and there is no confirmation that Amber has returned to Alberta.
