Update: Mr. Bauer was sentenced to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 12 years in connection to the fatal 2022 stabbing of Holbert Tew in Mission BC

RCMP were called to the 33800-block of 4 Avenue on December 14th at approximately 7:00am.

On arrival police located a man suffering from stab wounds. Despite lifesaving efforts from first responders, the victim was pronounced at the scene. The victim has been identified as Holbert Tew, 64.

Update: On January 6, 2023, IHIT investigators, supported by the Mission RCMP and the Upper Fraser Valley Regional District RCMP, located and arrested Matthew Bauer, 27, of Chilliwack, and charged him with second degree murder in relation to the homicide of Holbert Tew.

Update: Matthew Bauer, 29, was found guilty, and now faces an automatic life sentence for second-degree murder. 

Update: On January 13, 2025, the murder trial of Mr. Bauer began in the B.C. Supreme Court in Abbotsford. On February 27, 2025, the jury found Mr. Bauer guilty of second-degree murder.

On June 19, 2025, Mr. Bauer was sentenced to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 12 years.

This was a senseless and unprovoked attack that resulted in the loss of Mr. Tew, an innocent man, says Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT.
