An attempted murder charge has been elevated to second-degree murder following the death of a man who was critically injured in an alleged assault in Niagara Falls

Niagara Regional Police were called to Greater Niagara General Hospital around 1 p.m. on Jan. 26 after concerns were raised about the condition of 72-year-old Larry Young.

He was later transferred to a hospital outside the region to receive specialized treatment.

Police say their investigation determined the assault occurred at a residence on Buckley Avenue, leading to the arrest of 44-year-old Blair Young, who was initially charged with attempted murder.

Larry Young died from his injuries on Jan 31st, at which point the homicide unit assumed control of the investigation. During a court appearance on Wednesday, Blair Young’s charge was upgraded to second-degree murder.

Investigators have confirmed that the victim and the accused are father and son.
