At around 12:40 a.m. on April 14, 2026, Durham Region Police were called to a home near Harwood Avenue North and Taunton Road East, in Ajax, following reports of a break-in in progress. When they arrived, they found an adult man with serious injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to reports, the victim was fatally stabbed.

Two suspects had already fled before police got there. Officers, along with the DRPS K9 Unit, carried out an extensive search of the area but were unable to locate them. Residents may notice a heavier police presence nearby as the investigation continues.

Update: The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Thisal (Sam) Sanjula Perera. At this time, investigators believe this was a targeted incident and there are no concerns for public safety.
