Michael Angutetuar, a Whale Cove councillor facing sexual assault and manslaughter charges, has been released on bail and will remain under house arrest until his trial.

Angutetuar was elected to Whale Cove’s council in October 2023 for a four-year term. On March 25, he was arrested following an incident that allegedly resulted in the death of a young woman.

While being held in Iqaluit, Angutetuar missed more than three consecutive council meetings. He also owes the hamlet approximately $1,200 for tires purchased from the municipality, according to senior administrative officer Brian Fleming.

According to CBC, following his release on August 19th, Angutetuar’s lawyer, Alan Regel, said his client plans to continue serving on council unless circumstances beyond his control prevent him from doing so. However, the hamlet is now looking into whether Angutetuar can be removed from council because of the missed meetings and unpaid debt.

A publication ban remains in place, preventing the woman’s identity and evidence presented during the bail hearing from being published.
