Abbotsford police responded to the report of an assault in progress at a residence in the 3400 Block of Wagner Drive on March 15th, 2024 at approximately 10:50pm.

Police arrived to find a 41-year-old Balwinder Kaur, suffering from life-threatening stabbing injuries. Life-saving efforts were immediately provided, however Kaur died of her injuries.

50-year-old Jagpreet Singh, the victim’s husband, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with 2nd-degree murder. He remains in police custody.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over the investigation.

Update June 18th 2026: A B.C. Supreme Court judge has convicted Jagpreet Singh, 52, of second-degree murder in the 2024 killing of his wife, Balwinder Kaur, 41, in Abbotsford.

According to CTV News, Singh, arrived in Canada from India on March 9, 2024, six days before the murder.

The court heard that Kaur was stabbed seven times in the couple’s basement suite on March 15, 2024. Singh claimed the stabbing occurred during a struggle and argued he did not intend to kill her. However, Justice Andrea Ormiston found his testimony unreliable and rejected the defence’s claim that he acted under provocation.

In her ruling, the judge said the number and severity of the wounds, including a fatal stab wound to the heart, demonstrated that Singh intended to kill Kaur. The second-degree murder conviction carries an automatic life sentence, with parole eligibility to be determined at a later hearing.
