Toronto police responded to a call for unknown trouble in the Scarborough Golf Club Road and Kingston Road area on March 14th at approximately 4:11 a.m.
On arrival, police located Julia MacIsaac, 42, of Toronto, with obvious signs of trauma. She was pronounced at the scene.
David Slinger 43, of Toronto, was arrested at the scene, and has been charged with:
- First Degree Murder
Update May 2026: Slinger and MacIsaac dated for ten years before splitting up in 2017. According to Global News, Julia MacIsaac allowed Slinger to stay in her townhome with her despite her growing concerns about his behaviour.
Slinger, who had been hospitalized for mental health issues, forced his way into her locked bedroom during the night and fatally attacked her, later calling 911 and claiming he was in psychosis. Evidence showed a violent struggle, and he attempted to cover up parts of the incident before calling for help.
He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on April 24th 2026.
The court heard MacIsaac had been trying to support him despite feeling unsafe. She was remembered as a compassionate person whose kindness made her vulnerable.
Slinger was sentenced to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 12 years, with the reduced period reflecting his mental health condition.
