Update: Chad Jason Dandan, a BOLO Top 25 Most Wanted (#7), arrested in Surrey in connection with Zeyad Shammo death; two others facing murder, kidnapping and extortion charges

On September 10, 2024, at approximately 7:45 p.m. West District General Patrol officers responded to the 300 block of Bridge Lake Drive for a report of Zeyad Shammo, 22, who had been abducted the previous day.

In the early morning hours of September 13th, 2024, investigators, with assistance from the Tactical Support Team (TST), located Shammo deceased. His cause of death has not been released by police.

His death is considered a homicide, and two suspects that were known to the victim were identified by investigators and taken into custody with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team (TST).

Sonny BALEMBA (26) of Winnipeg has been charged with the following:

  • First Degree Murder
  • Kidnapping
  • Extortion

Robert James CHAYKOWSKI (26) of Winnipeg has been charged with the following:

  • First Degree Murder
  • Kidnapping
  • Extortion
  • Fail to Comply with Release Order x 4

They were both detained in custody.

Update February 21, 2025: The Major Crimes Unit requests the public’s assistance in locating a third suspect, Chad Jason DANDAN, a 24-year-old male.

DANDAN is believed to be in the area of Northern Manitoba and a warrant for First Degree Murder, Kidnapping, and Extortion has been issued for his arrest.

DANDAN may be armed and dangerous and should not be approached if encountered. DANDAN is believed to be driving a dark coloured SUV and may be in the area of Northern Manitoba.

On March 26, 2026, with help from the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia (CFSEU-BC) and the BOLO Program, 25-year-old Chad Jason Dandan was arrested in Surrey, B.C., on a Canada-wide warrant.

He faces charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, and extortion. After his arrest, he was handed over to Major Crimes Unit investigators and transported back to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he remains in custody.
