Toronto police Cont. Northrup and his partner responded to a robbery on process shortly after midnight on July 2nd in the city hall parkade, located near Bay and Queen streets.
According to reports, the officers were in plain clothes, with police identification when they approached the suspect who was outside of the vehicle. The suspect then entered the vehicle and tried to leave in the vehicle.
Northrup was struck by the vehicle, and died of his injuries. Chief James Ramer said the incident was “deliberate and intentional” and the homicide unit has been called in to investigate.

Northrup’s partner was also transported to hospital where she was treated and has since been released.
Umar Zameer, 31, was arrested and charged with:
1) First-Degree Murder

Zameer had pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder during his trial.
Jurors have found Umar Zameer not guilty of all criminal charges, including first-degree murder, in the death of Toronto police officer Det.-Const. Jeffrey Northrup. The jury also found Zameer not guilty of manslaughter caused by dangerous driving.
