Blackville RCMP detachment responded to a report of an assault at the Atlantic Institution on October 6, 2022, at approximately 5:20 p.m.

Police said a 49-year-old inmate at the facility was located badly injured in his cell. He was transported to hospital with what were believed to be life-threatening injuries, where he later died. The victim has since been identified by multiple outlets as Richard King, originally of Hainesville, who was serving a sentence for second-degree murder of a Woodstock man in 2006.

Update On May 15, 2023, a charge of second degree murder was laid against 31-year-old Christian Enang Clyke, in Miramichi Provincial Court. He remains in custody, and is scheduled to appear in court on May 25.

Update – August 13, 2025: Christian Enang Clyke was found guilty of second-degree murder on August 5 in Miramichi Provincial Court, in connection with the death of a 49-year-old man from Hainesville, N.B. His sentencing is set for October 28, 2025, at 1:30 p.m.

*Richard King is serving a life sentence at Atlantic Institution in Renous for the 2006 murder of Shawn “Budgie” Tomah from Woodstock First Nation.
