On Tuesday December 10, 2024 family members of Shalini SINGH, 40, reported her missing to the Hamilton Police Service. Police said Shalini last had contact with her family on Wednesday December 4, 2024. Shalini has not been heard from since that date.
“The initial investigation was assigned to patrol officers and Divisional Detectives out of Central Police Station. Information gathered by investigators has caused growing concern surrounding the circumstances of Shalini’s disappearance. As a result, this investigation has now been assigned to the Homicide Unit” said Hamilton police.
Initially, Shalini’s common-law boyfriend was also reported missing but was found on December 11, though he is not cooperating with the investigation.
Shalini is described as female, with a light complexion, 5’4”, 120 lbs, brown eyes, and shoulder-length black hair. It is believed that Shalini does not currently have access to a vehicle.
Police announced on February 25th, that Hamilton Police are currently searching the Glanbrook Landfill at 1500 Haldibrook Road.
Shalini was last seen in her Hamilton apartment, and CCTV footage shows she did not leave the building after December 4. Investigators suspect she may have been killed in the apartment and removed through the building’s garbage system. They searched waste at the Kenora Waste Transfer Station but found no evidence. Most of the waste was sent to Glanbrook Landfill, where a search was being held and expected to last several weeks.
Update: Hamilton police announced that partial human remains were located within the targeted area on May 21st.
Hamilton Police are actively collaborating with the Office of the Coroner, the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service, and the Centre of Forensic Sciences to investigate the discovered remains. DNA testing is currently in progress, with results expected to help confirm the individual’s identity.
The search at the landfill site is still ongoing, and the timeline for completion will be adjusted as new developments emerge.
Update: Police confirmed the DNA analysis on Friday, June 20. Jeffrey Smith was arrested in a Burlington parking lot on the same day. He is charged with second-degree murder and indignity to human remains. Det. Sgt. Daryl Reid said the two were together for five to seven years at the time of her death.
Police said the search of the landfill site is ongoing and is expected to conclude on June 27th.
