Following a preliminary hearing in Iqaluit, a judge ruled there is enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial on a charge of first-degree murder. However, the court also approved a request from the defence to assess Kalluk’s mental state.

The assessment will determine whether he was suffering from a mental disorder at the time of the incident, which could affect his criminal responsibility.

Further details from the preliminary hearing remain under a publication ban.
