RCMP received a report from the High Prairie Hospital of the sudden death of a baby boy on October 6th at approximately 4:30pm.
Police said the 7-month-old boy was killed in a home in High Prairie, but not his own home. Police could not elaborate on the case. The victim has been identified as Oaklan Reid Cunningham.
An autopsy was performed on Tuesday October 11th at the Edmonton office of the chief medical examiner and the infant’s death has been ruled homicide. Police said there are persons of interest in the case, however, no arrests have been made at this time.
Update
Kyra Renee Backs, 29, of High Prairie, was arrested on October 15th and charged with Second Degree Murder in the death of 7-month-old Oaklan Cunningham. Backs is scheduled to appear in High Prairie Provincial Court on Oct. 24, 2022. Police said Back ran a home daycare in High Prairie at the time of the death.
Investigators are looking to speak to any families with concerns, who sent their kids to this day home, currently or in the past. Anyone with information is asked to contact the High Prairie RCMP at 780-523-3378.
