Montreal Shooting Has Left Three People Dead, Including a Montreal police officer, a Civilian, and the Suspect

A major police operation unfolded in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood on Monday after reports of gunfire left a police officer dead, another officer critically injured, and two others dead, including the suspect.

The incident began around 11:35 a.m. near the intersection of Courtrai and Trans Island avenues, where Montreal police (SPVM) responded to reports of a shooting. Police said a person who was sticking a gun out of a window at the Hilton hotel. As officers converged on the scene, authorities launched a large-scale emergency response and urged residents to avoid the area.

By midday, an emergency alert was issued warning of an armed and dangerous suspect. Residents within a designated area bounded by Côte-des-Neiges Road, MacDonald Street, Highway 40, and Queen Mary Road were instructed to shelter indoors, lock their doors, stay away from windows, and follow police directions.

According to CTV News, one nearby resident reported hearing what sounded like 10 to 12 gunshots in quick succession before seeing families and children fleeing a nearby park in panic. Police quickly flooded the neighbourhood as the situation unfolded.

At approximately 1:22 p.m., Montreal police announced that the suspect had been neutralized. Authorities confirmed that two police officers and one civilian had been injured during the incident.

Shortly afterward, police reported that one of the wounded officers had died from their injuries. Officials later confirmed that the second officer, a female member of the force, remained in critical condition. Montreal has identified the deceased officer as Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34. 

Investigators also confirmed that both the suspect and the injured civilian died as a result of the altercation, bringing the death toll to three. According to CBC the deceased civilian was identified as Michael Mizrahi. According to reports he was shot by a Montreal police officer.

The suspect has been identified as Seth Scott Hatfield, 25, of Lethbridge, Alta.

According to The Gazette, Seth Hatfield, who was allegedly responsible for the fatal shooting in Côte-des-Neiges on Monday, appears to have authored a manifesto containing themes commonly linked to the “involuntary celibate” (incel) movement and promoting the use of terrorism as a means of advancing its ideology. The 104-page document argues that feminism, liberalism, and capitalism are responsible for what the author describes as the hardships faced by men. It proposes the establishment of a “new order” that would significantly restrict women’s economic independence and sexual autonomy.

The investigation remains ongoing as police work to determine the circumstances surrounding the deadly confrontation.
