A man has been charged with second-degree murder following a fatal shooting earlier this year on O’Chiese First Nation in Alberta.
RCMP say 28-year-old Derrick Phazar Whitford was formally charged on July 29 in connection with the death of 41-year-old Shawn Lee Geddes.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight on January 28, when Rocky Mountain House RCMP responded to a 911 call about a shooting at a residence on the First Nation. When officers arrived, they found Geddes dead at the scene.
The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit took over the case and later identified Whitford as a suspect. At the time of the charge, Whitford was already in custody for unrelated matters. He remains in custody and will appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer at a future date.
