Durham Region police were called to the area of Dean Avenue and Ritson Road South in Oshawa for reports of a disturbance on January 2, 2024, at approximately 11:30 p.m.

On arrival police located a 62-year-old male outside the residence suffering from obvious signs of trauma. He was transported to a local area hospital where he died of his injuries.  

A post-mortem examination confirmed that Steven TURGEON, age 62 of Oshawa, died as a result of a stabbing.

Police said two suspects had fled the area on foot and were able to locate one of the suspects a short distance away and took him into custody without incident.  Police are still searching for the second suspect.

Tyler STEPHENS, age 32 from Clarington is charged with: Second Degree Murder.

Update: On July 23rd, Durham Regional Police announced that Nathan Christopher LOPEZ, age 26 from Toronto is charged with: Second Degree Murder.

He was held for a bail hearing.

Update July 21st 2026

Tyler Stephens received an eight-and-a-half-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to manslaughter, while Nathan Lopez was sentenced to six years and nine months for robbery. The pair had planned to break into a home on Kitchener Avenue to steal cocaine, but the robbery quickly escalated when the occupants fought back. During the confrontation, 62-year-old Steven Turgeon was fatally stabbed.

The court heard that Lopez entered the home carrying a BB gun while Stephens waited outside before joining the confrontation. After the pair fled, they attempted to dispose of evidence, but were later arrested by police.

Justice Michelle Fuerst described home invasions as serious offences that violate the safety and sanctity of people’s homes. Although prosecutors sought longer prison terms, the judge imposed lower sentences after considering the circumstances of each offender, including Stephens’ long struggle with drug addiction.
