In the early hours of June 1, 2024, a passerby walking through Kaministiquia River Heritage Park came across an unresponsive man and called for help just after 3 a.m. The victim was identified as 34-year-old Francis Joseph Valle of Thunder Bay. He was rushed to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, but sadly, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The case was taken on by the Major Crimes Unit alongside the Forensic Identification Unit. After several days of detailed investigative work, officers identified a suspect. On June 9, 2024, police arrested 39-year-old Joshua Christian Peter Diamond of Thunder Bay in connection with the death.
