Lanark County OPP responded to the area of North Street North and Sherbrooke Street East in Perth on October 25th at approximately 3:00pm.

On arrival, police located a 15-year-old male deceased. The victim has been identified as 15-year-old Reese Stanzel.

A 16-year-old who police say identifies as female was arrested at a home and charged with second-degree murder.

Update: OPP said on November 28th that the investigation has resulted in the charge being elevated to first-degree murder under section 235(1) of the Criminal Code.

Update: The teen was 16 years old when she was arrested, so her identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. She pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in November 2025.

According to CBC, the Crown and defence jointly recommended a 10-year sentence in July, which is the maximum penalty for first-degree murder under the applicable youth legislation.

The teen has already spent more than 600 days in custody and will receive credit equivalent to one year for time served.
