Winnipeg Police Service responded to the 500 block Balmoral Street for the report of an injured woman on June 23, 2024, at approximately 12:30 a.m.
On arrival police located the female who had sustained life-threatening injuries. The victim was transported to hospital in critical condition, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
The Homicide Unit has assumed the investigation and has identified the victim as 29-year-old Norma Jean Sumner. Sumner was a Dauphin River First Nation member but had recently been residing in Winnipeg. Family notifications have been made.
The investigation continued, resulting in the arrest of Kyle Byron STRAIGHT, 23, on July 3, 2024. Straight was arrested while he was walking in the 200 block of Salter Street. He was then turned over to the Homicide Unit for further processing.
Kyle Byron STRAIGHT, 23, has been charged with Manslaughter.
