Toronto Homicide #11 – Hang-Kam Annie Chiu, attacked by a man armed with a hammer, dies in hospital.

Toronto police received several reports for a possible medical complaint at Sheppard Avenue East near Markham Road, on February 21st just after 7:00pm.

Police and paramedics arrived to find Hang-Kam Annie Chiu, age 64, of Scarborough, suffering from serious injuries. It is reported that Chiu was walking eastbound along Sheppard Avenue East when she was struck in the back of the head by a man armed with a hammer. (Police originally said Chiu was found lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound.) The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Saad Akhtar, age 30, of Scarborough, turned himself in and has been charged with first-degree murder.

Update February 26th
Toronto police said evidence was discovered which led investigators to believe the homicide may have been a terrorism-related offense. The charge against Akhtar was upgraded to First-Degree Murder – Including Terrorist Activity, invoking Section 231 (6.01) of the Criminal Code of Canada.
