At approximately 1:50 a.m. On March 3rd, police and EMS responded to a 911 call from a residence in the 100 block of Belmont Drive S.W. Upon arrival, officers found a woman deceased at the scene.

A person was taken into custody for questioning, and authorities believe the incident to be targeted in nature. There is no ongoing risk to the public.

An autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, has identified the victim as Anna BRAZHKO, 38, of Calgary. She died as a result of a homicide.

Investigators believe the ex-spouse of the victim broke into the residence she shared with a current partner and fatally assaulted her.

Anna’s ex-spouse, Mohamad Anass Mahmou AL-SAHLI, 47, is charged with one count of first-degree murder.

Update July 23, 2026: According to CBC, Mohamad Anass Mahmou AL-SAHLI, charged with the murder of his former spouse will undergo a court-ordered assessment to determine whether he was not criminally responsible (NCR) at the time of the alleged offence. The order was granted by a Court of King’s Bench judge following a defence application.

An NCR assessment will evaluate the accused’s mental state at the time of the alleged killing. Defence lawyers initially sought a separate assessment to determine whether he was fit to stand trial, but later withdrew that request. His jury trial remains scheduled to begin in mid-October.

At the time of the alleged murder, the accused was facing previous domestic violence charges involving the victim, including assault, choking and forcible confinement. Those charges were later withdrawn after he entered into a peace bond that included a no-contact order. Police allege he later broke into the victim’s Calgary home in the early morning hours and fatally assaulted her.
