On November 3, 2025, officers from St. Catharines/Thorold’s 1 District were notified of an assault that had taken place the previous day near Queenston Street and Eastchester Avenue in St. Catharines.
The victim, 54-year-old Jack Legault, was rushed to a hospital outside the region with serious injuries.
Following the investigation, 36-year-old Richard Taylor, also of St. Catharines, was arrested and initially charged with assault causing bodily harm and failing to comply with a probation order. He was held for a bail hearing and has remained in custody since.
Detectives from the 1 District Criminal Investigation Bureau later upgraded the charges to aggravated assault as the investigation continued. Tragically, on December 15, 2025, Jack Legault succumbed to the injuries he sustained.
The case was then taken over by the Niagara Regional Police Service Homicide Unit. On March 18, 2026, during a court appearance, Richard Taylor was formally charged with second-degree murder. He remains in custody.
